Career Journey

Different sectors and different perspectives, all shaping how I think about digital leadership and transformation today.

NPFIT, CFH, NHSD

NHS

What started with NPfIT became Connecting for Health, then the NHS Information Centre and ultimately NHS Digital and my career evolved alongside it. Across more than a decade, I moved through a variety of roles, each bringing greater responsibility, broader experience and new opportunities to lead change. The names, structures and priorities changed around me, but that period gave me an extraordinary grounding in national-scale digital transformation, technology and data and shaped much of the leader I am today.

Leeds Teaching Hospital

Moving to Leeds Teaching Hospitals changed my perspective on digital transformation. After years working on national programmes and services, I was suddenly much closer to the people experiencing the impact of the decisions we made — clinicians, frontline teams and, most importantly, patients. I loved being able to see the connection between the technology and the difference it could make to someone’s care. It reminded me that behind every system, process and piece of data is a person, and that has stayed at the heart of how I think about digital ever since.

Moving into global technology was a significant shift in my career and opened up a completely different perspective. I went from being the customer of technology to understanding what it takes to create, position and deliver solutions at scale, working across countries, cultures and complex healthcare systems. It stretched me commercially, broadened my understanding of technology far beyond individual programmes and taught me the value of genuine partnership between suppliers and the organisations they serve. It was also where I really learned to operate with influence at scale — connecting technology, strategy and relationships to turn ambitious ideas into opportunities for change.

Consultancy

Consultancy gave me another completely different perspective — the opportunity to step into organisations, quickly understand complex challenges and help leaders work out what needed to change and how to make it happen. Working across different clients, teams and environments strengthened my ability to listen, challenge, simplify complexity and connect strategy with delivery. It also reinforced that there is rarely one ‘right’ answer to transformation; the best solutions come from understanding the organisation, its people and the outcomes it is trying to achieve. Above all, it taught me the value of bringing experience and challenge while never losing sight of the fact that lasting change has to belong to the organisation itself.

Moving into regulation has brought together so many strands of my career. I’ve had the opportunity to take everything I’ve learned from national transformation, frontline services, global technology and consultancy and apply it from inside an organisation again — this time with responsibility for shaping the digital and technology direction as well as delivering it. What I’ve particularly valued is the opportunity to build: strengthening the foundations, developing the team, creating greater clarity and governance, and helping position digital, data and technology as part of the organisation’s wider strategy. It feels less like another change of sector and more like the point where many of the experiences from across my career have come together.
